The 2009 H1N1 swine flu pandemic, which was associated with pig farming, spread globally within just months. Chook flu strains keep on to pose a big danger, with hugely pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) creating sporadic human bacterial infections, causing a fatality rate of above 50 per cent.
